Keeping Your Home, Garage and Yourself Organized

Your home and garage should be a place of peace and tranquility, however there is some work involved if you plan on keeping it that way.

You can have an organized garage and house! I understand that people have extremely busy lives in these days. Especially when you have a family of about four or five people in one home and everyone is busy with their own schedules. But there is also a word called procrastinate. Now I am guilty of being a procrastinator about certain things that I just dread doing from time to time.

When you just do it and not think about it you will see that it wasn’t that bad after all and your house will finally be organized. When you really think about it the things that you procrastinate about are things that take a lot of work or a lot of time. Just because it is a big job does not mean you have to try to get it all done in one day.

You will get so overwhelmed that you will probably just give up. Take things step by step if you have time during the week make small goals of maybe thirty minutes a day. Then on the weekends maybe do one whole room this way you won’t get burned out so much. Also remember you’re not the only one living in your house so you shouldn’t be responsible for all the work. Put that husband and those kids to work besides it could be fun.

Here are some examples that you can do for thirty minutes a day

1. Some people medicine cabinets look like you just walked into a pharmacy. If there is medicine that has been in there and has expired a while ago then gets rid of it there is no reason to have expired medicine in your cabinets.

2. Are you the type that gets a new magazine or maybe four or five new magazines each month and you hold onto them because it has a good article you like. Only now because you have held on to so many you have about a hundred magazines lying around your house. Well it is time to sort through those and throw the old ones out. This will not take up too much time and you could do it while watching your favorite TV program.

3. Going through your purse and throwing out old grocery lists or receipts you don’t need anymore is also a start at getting organized. This will only take you about ten or fifteen minutes depending on how big your purse is.

4. When I was growing up my parents had this one particular drawer in the kitchen called the junk drawer. Now that I am older and have my own kitchen I too have a junk drawer. A junk drawer is filled with everything you can pretty much think of loose change, pens and pencils, old mail, batteries, address books and the list goes on and on. If you put something inside that drawer good luck trying to get it out when you need it. So if you have a junk drawer it is time to tackle it.

5. Every month you should make a date to clean out the garage.  This does not mean spend the whole day out there going through every little item.  If you keep your garage clean and tidy using plenty of storage cabinets you should not have to do to much to keep it up.  Just spend an hour or two throwing away things that have accumulated on your work bench or putting tools back into their spots.  This way you will enjoy going to your garage when you do want to work on a project.

Being Creative with Your Storage

The majority of people out there just have too much stuff and not a whole lot of places to put everything.

Just because you may be short on cash does not mean you have to deal with the clutter.

This just means that you have to get creative. If you’re having a hard time trying to think of ideas and need some help here are some helpful hints to get you moving. Getting ideas online is also great.

Looking for crates to use for storage is a great idea because they are very low in cost and you can find them just about anywhere.

Baskets that you can decorate to match the décor in your home is great to keep your items in.

Maybe asking parents or grandparents if they have furniture that they have stored and aren’t using can come in handy. You never know what your grandma has had in her basement for all these years that can be restored.

Plastic containers that can be bought anywhere for very reasonable prices are wonderful for storage. They are nice because you can see everything you put in them. If you are storing children’s belongings I would highly suggest using these plastic containers.

If you know someone that when you visit them at their home they seem to be very well organized. Try asking them what their secret is about how they store you might be able to get some great ideas form them.

When storing things outside of your home such as a garage plastic containers are highly recommended. Boxes are just no use when they get damp or wet and the things inside can get ruined.

Instead of finding storage cabinets that take up a lot of floor space look for cabinets that are tall and have plenty of adjustable shelves.

Remember if you’re trying to reorganize a child’s room gets your child involved. By doing so you’re spending time together and teaching them organization skills.

Adding More Space with Bar and Wine Storage Cabinets

Bar and wine cabinets can come in many different sizes and styles.

If you are like me then you love having friends and family over for a nice visit and good conversation. When you have company in your home it is only proper to ask them if they would like a beverage if you have it available.

If you have a lot of people over getting to the kitchen and having to make two or three trips back to the kitchen could get pretty aggravating. That’s where a bar and wine cabinet can really come in handy. Everything you need is there in the same room as all your guests so you can really enjoy your time with them.

Bar and wine cabinets can come in many different sizes and styles. No matter what style you are seeking I’m sure you will find. If you’re looking for sophistication and elegance I would recommend the Bealle Steel Oval it can store twelve bottles it has two drawers, two doors and two adjustable shelves. This design is very vintage with Dutch West Indies detailing and a Bahamas finish. Did I mention it also has an additional four galleried shelves on both ends?

Say you would really benefit from having a bar and wine cabinet but you don’t have a whole lot of room as far as where you want to put it. A Mardi Gras cabinet would be great for you. It is beautiful with hand painting over Black Aniline finish. The top flips open and can hold twenty-two bottles and fourteen glasses. It has drawers for more storage and everything fits in perfectly.

If elegance is something that you’re not really into but you want something a little more casual that is not a problem. Some casual bar and wine cabinets come with marble tops not only can you use them for bar and wine entertainment you can also use them for kitchen supplies if your planning on having people over for a meal.

Upgrading your entertainment space does not have to cost you a great deal of money you can find something just right for you for well under a thousand dollars. Some go as low as a couple hundred dollars. Is a bar and wine cabinet definitely something you are interested in?

The first place you should go to decide which cabinet you should purchase is the internet. The internet can provide you with hundred of bar and wine cabinets from all over the United States or even all over the world. It’s a great way to do your research with out having to leave your home.

Getting Your Garage Organized with Storage Cabinets

A garage is pretty much everyone’s nightmare when it comes to storage. Getting a garage organized can be quite a job for some one. I promise it can be done.

Here are some tips to help you along.

Now I’m sure that everything that is in your garage is not just your things. It is the whole families things right? Well make a family day out of it and get them involved. This way you will get things done a lot faster.

If your garage is like mine you have bikes lying around that you trip over every time you walk in. Maybe your husband has tools laying around that needs a special spot so they don’t get lost. Pegs boards, grids or hooks would be great to hang those things up so they are not in your way.

When storing things in your garage like holiday decorations try to use clear containers. By using clear containers you will know what is inside just by looking at the outside container. Then when Christmas comes around you won’t dread having to go out and get the decorations you need.

When storing containers that are used once or twice a year consider putting these things on a shelf that can be reached fairly easily. If you have an attic either in your garage or house I would not advise putting these types of things up there. It would not be fun having to get that stuff out when it is freezing cold outside.

Now if you have bigger items that need to be stored and it just takes up a lot of space then overhead storage might needed such as an attic. After all you are trying to free up space in your garage.

The real reason for a garage is to keep your cars in. If you like to keep your yard nice and neat then you might have things like a lawn mower, weed whacker or maybe even a wheel barrow. You should consider building a shed. So when you are doing your yard work you know everything you need will be in your shed.

Garage floors can get pretty dirty. Dirt oil and grim can really build up on a garage floor. A good way to keep your garage floor clean is to use epoxy to cover the floor. Epoxy gives it protecting form things that can harm it.

Lets face it some people are pack rats and just have too many things. If you have something like clothes, shoes, toys, or books that you have not used in over a year then it is time to get rid of those things. A garage sale is a great way to get rid of things you and your family no longer use and you can get some extra cash in your pocket. Another great way to get of your old things is to donate it to charity. There are a lot of people in need these days and your donations would go a long way.

By keeping things that you just don’t need to be kept such as your child toys that they haven’t played with in a couple of years they could start having a hard time dealing with letting go of things. If you have a garage sale have them get involved let them pick out what they want to sell and what they want to keep. You and your child might need to compromise on some things.

Last but not least to maintain organization and cleanliness it is important to go through your things once a year and get rid of things you don’t need so you can make room for more new things you need to store.

Be Sure Your Storage is Accessible

You should safely be able to get to the items that you have placed in storage.  Make sure that there are not safety issues with your storage cabinets.

Another thing to consider is once your done storing the things that you often use makes sure you are not breaking your neck or back trying to get these things out of your storage everyday. Reconsider putting things up high or real down low that you use often because eventually you will just get aggravated and not want to put it back. So once again you’re stuck with clutter because you didn’t want to put it back where it should go. Keep things used often at eye level this will be called your primary storage. By keeping things that are used everyday at eye level you will make your life easier. Things that are rarely used are secondary storage these things you can put up high on a shelf or down low on the bottom self. The third type of storage is tertiary storage. Tertiary storage is things that are only used once or twice a year like holiday decorations.

Make sure your possessions are safe

When I talk about storing I don’t mean just throwing items in a box and stuffing it in your closet. Some things that you store are going to need some special treatment. You have to consider all possibilities when you want to keep something for a long time. When you are storing your belongings in an attic, basement or garage you have to think about weather climates. What would happen to your things if it got too hot, cold or damp? Would your items be protected from bugs or rodents? Just throwing your items in a box will definitely get damaged in these types of conditions. Make sure everything is stored the proper way.

Create a Plan Before Installing Storage Cabinets

Deciding where you store your things should be thought out very carefully.

There are many different reasons why people have storage spaces. Do you have a house full of clutter? Do you have boxes of things just sitting in the corner of your bedroom that you have no clue what to do with the stuff that is inside?

Making storage space is ideal for you my friend. Maybe you have belongings that are very dear to you given by a parent or grandparent that has passed on. It may be something private that you want to be put up somewhere safe and sound. No matter what the reason is everyone should have room in their house to store their belongings.

When getting started making room for storage, make sure you set goals and stick with them, you will get exactly what you want. Making a plan before you start anything can make things so much easier.

You have to start somewhere…

So now you know the first step to being organized. By getting everything together at one time in the long run you will save yourself a lot of time and hassle. You don’t want to start storing a certain item and think that you are finished only to go onto the next room and have twenty more things that you have just stored.

Now that would get pretty frustrating. But at the same time don’t wear yourself out or get overwhelmed. Before you start storing go room by room gathering things together, when you have every room done then starting thinking about where your going to store. If you have a very busy schedule I would consider doing a room every other day.

Deciding where you store your things should be thought out very carefully. It is important that everything is stored exactly how you would like it to be. Things should also be stored at your convenience, for example shoes should be stored in a closet that in conveniently located next to your main entrance. Things that aren’t used to often should be stored in a closet that isn’t used too often.
